Support for mothers with borderline personality disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder where the core symptoms (emotion dysregulation, impulsivity and identity disturbance) can be exacerbated in the post-partum period. Mothers with BPD are likely to encounter specific challenges relating to the physical and emotional demands of caring for an infant. The presenters will provide an overview of the disorder and review the core components of treatment. The main focus of the presentation will be approaches to managing commonly encountered scenarios during home visitation.
By the end of this event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the clinical presentation of BPD and how it may vary in a new mother.
- Consider what is known about the impact of BPD on the developing infant brain and parent child relationship in the early years.
- Learn what skills and behaviours mothers with BPD can practice to mitigate the impact of emotional dysregulation on parenting their infants.
- Identify practical evidence-based approaches for working with mothers that nurses can use in their home visitation encounters.
